The effect of callous-unemotional trait on externalizing and conduct problems of female adolescents : short-term longitudinal mediation effect of parental monitoring
Lee Joo-Young

Abstract
This study examined an effect of callous-unemotional(CU) trait and short-term longitudinal mediation effect of parental monitoring on externalizing and conduct problems of female adolescents. A total of 164 grade 7 and 8 students from a female middle school in Seoul participated in the study. The results of path analysis were as follows. The callous-unemotional trait and problem behavior were measured at time 1(T1) and parental monitoring and problem behavior were measured at time 2(T2), one year later, by self-report questionnaires. When T1 externalizing problem was controlled, T1 CU trait significantly predicted T2 externalizing problem only through mediation effect of T2 parental monitoring. However, when T1 conduct problem was controlled, not only T1 CU trait directly predicted T2 conduct problems, but also indirectly predicted T2 conduct problems by mediation effect of T2 parental monitoring. High CU trait affects a decrease of parental monitoring, and a subsequent increase of externalizing and conduct problems of female adolescents is mediated by parental monitoring. The results of this study provided therapeutic implications for externalizing and conduct problems of female adolescents focusing on their CU traits and a change in parental monitoring.
